The Society was established, and incoprorated in 1989. This was due to concerns that thousands of cats and kittens were killed at cat refuges, or abandoned when the females became pregnant.
We are a volunteer, not-for-profit charity and do not receive state or federal government funding. We are funded entirely by donations, bequests and grants.
A committee is elected by members and is responsible for;
- the operation and management of the society
- organising fund raising events
- lobbying council and state governments for the protection of cats
- applying for grants to Lotterywest, councils and business
- submissions to councils to ensure their bylaws do not impact adversely on cat ownership
Working with 35 veterinarians throughout the metropolitan area, Albany and Geraldton, the society provides subsidised sterilisations for cat owners to help reduce the number of unwanted kittens born each year.
For the safety of cats, our policy is;
- cats should be confined at night
- vacination against cat flu and feline enteritis
- identification through micro chipping, or by collar and disc
- no free range breeding (roaming and mating at large)
