About Cat Sterilisation Society

The Society was established, and incoprorated in 1989. This was due to concerns that thousands of cats and kittens were killed at cat refuges, or abandoned when the females became pregnant.

We have sterilised over 43,000 cats for the financially disadvanged, by doing this we have saved thousands of lives. Our budget is oly $60,000 per year, 98% goes on saving cats and only 2% on administration. We have achieved a lot on very little money and only 10 volunteers. It is very strange that governments consider us so insignificant that the  W.A Government advisory committee is not even consulting us on the soon to be produced legislation. We have collected data from over 37,000 people for whom we helped to sterilise their cat, many of these people have been referred to us by social workers,.

When we close the large number of cats owned by very low income people will continue to breed. Laws will not reach them. Add your voice time and money to our cause, to save cats from being abandoned.  We are a not for-profit charity and do not receive state or federal government funding. We are funded entirely by the hard work of our members who setup stalls in shopping centres. We are also helped by donations, bequests and grants.

A committee is elected by members and is responsible for;

  • the operation and management of the society
  • organising fund raising events
  • lobbying council and state governments for the protection of cats
  • applying for grants to Lotterywest, councils and business
  • submissions to councils to ensure their bylaws do not impact adversely on cat ownership

Working with 35 veterinarians throughout the metropolitan area, Albany and Geraldton, the society provides subsidised sterilisations for cat owners to help reduce the number of unwanted kittens born each year.

For the safety of cats, our policy is;

  • cats should be confined at night
  • vacination against cat flu and feline enteritis
  • identification through micro chipping, or by collar and disc
  • no free range breeding (roaming and mating at large)
